The Faculty of Science and the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) is looking for a Tenure tracker in environmental data science and modelling (0.8-1.0 fte).


  • The candidate will contribute to education and research of the CML-Industrial Ecology (IE) Department;
  • Research will be, for the most part, done in the context of projects funded by EU programs like Horizon 2020 or the EIT Raw materials and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Research focuses on further development and application of IE tools such as life cycle (sustainability) assessment, environmentally extended input-output analysis and material flow analysis and related modelling and forecasting;
  • CML-IE has been successful in attracting PhD funding, and we expect the Tenure Tracker to supervise 1-2 PhD students from the moment of joining CML;
  • Teaching mostly focuses on contributing to the Master Industrial Ecology. Other teaching may include the CML Minor Sustainable Development and the Leiden University College Sustainability track;
  • The candidate will contribute to the acquisition of new research projects.

  • You can develop and motivate its own scientific group;
  • You must have a PhD degree in a relevant field, and have some additional years of academic work experience. Relevant backgrounds could include PhD degrees in industrial ecology or sustainability science, or other fields such as econometrics, economics, applied mathematics, applied physics, system dynamics, and related modelling, combined with a strong interest in sustainability;
  • In our Tenure Track system, it is the ambition to appoint the successful candidate ultimately in a professorial position. You must hence already show the potential to develop an own research line, become internationally visible, and take responsibility for external acquisition. You must have proven already to be productive in terms of scientific output. Ideally the research line you will develop will expand CML-IE’s existing research portfolio. Topics could be e.g. ‘big data and IE’, dynamic scenario modelling, or adding a spatially explicit dimension to the IE toolbox, or other subjects you think that bring the IE field forward;
  • Strong quantitative skills in data gathering, data compilation, analysis, and related mathematics and coding in e.g. Matlab, Python or R are essential;
  • Knowledge of industrial ecology tools including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Material flow analysis (MFA) and Environmentally extended input output analysis (EE IO) is strongly desired;
  • University level teaching skills should be good and demonstrable;
  • You should be able to work in a dynamic, multi-project context: distributing his or her attention among the various projects and tasks, keeping an eye to deadlines and deliverables, taking initiatives and contacting partners;
  • The international character of the work necessitates proficiency in English, passive and active, written and spoken. Proficiency in Dutch is an advantage.


Our Tenure track is expected to lead to a promotion to a tenured position as associate professor and eventually to grow into the role of a full professor. We focus on talent by investing in your professional and personal development. It has a strong focus on coaching and training. A special mentor program is offered with fellow Tenure Trackers in a peer group, in order to develop managerial skills.
We offer a stimulating and exciting environment for developing a successful professional academic career. Your contract will follow the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (cao Nederlandse Universiteiten). The initial appointment will normally be at assistant professor level for a maximum of six years. This position will be changed into a permanent contract if the candidate conforms to the requirements of the Tenure Track program. We offer a 6 year term position, with the possibility of a tenure position based on performance. Salary range from € 3,427.- to € 5,330.-gross per month (pay scale 11 or 12in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).

The Institute Environmental Sciencesis positioned in the Faculty of Sciences of Leiden University. The core business of CML is to perform research and education in the interdisciplinary field of Environmental Sciences. CML has two Departments: Industrial Ecology (CML-IE) and Conservation Biology (CML-CB). Presently, around 70 Fte (including postdocs and PhD students) are employed at CML. CML collaborates with the TU Delft and Erasmus University in the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Sustainability (LDE-CfS) and Centre for Metropoles and Mainports (LDE-CMM). CML participates in the European Institute of Technology Raw Materials (EIT-RM) program, the flagship EU research program on resources.

The CML-IE department is core partner in the Leiden / Delft joint degree Master program Industrial Ecology. The interdisciplinary program welcomes some 60-70 new students every year of which 50% come from abroad. Students have a background in either natural sciences, social sciences or engineering. Next to this CML contributes to various other teaching programs, including a Minor in Sustainable Development.

Research in the CML-IE department aims to provide a solid scientific basis for the analysis of sustainability via method development in the field of e.g. Life cycle assessment (LCA), material flow analysis (MFA) and environmentally extended input output analysis (EE IO). CML-IE is one of the globally best known institutes in this field.
