Research and teaching in software engineering


The Delft Software Engineering group is looking for a talented, ambitious, and enthusiastic individual. His/her responsibilities include:
• Conducting research in the field of software engineering, including the (co-)supervision of PhD students, collaboration with other academic partners and industry, acquiring external research funding, and (co-)managing externally funded research projects;
• Teaching and developing new education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, online and on campus, including the supervision of bachelor’s and master’s students in their graduation projects;
• Transferring knowledge and technology to external parties;
• Performing department and faculty management tasks.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute significantly to the research portfolio of the Software Engineering research group and is encouraged to develop his/her own research line in a viable and promising subfield of software engineering.

Applicants must have a PhD degree in the broad field of software engineering, a proven track record of research excellence, the ambition to strengthen and expand the research and teaching of the Software Engineering research group, a team player mentality, and good communication and social skills. Preferably, the successful candidate has experience in teaching at the university level.


A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position.

Electrical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science The position is situated in the Department of Software Technology (ST), specifically in the Software Engineering research group. ST is one of the leading Dutch departments in research and academic education in computer science, employing over 100 people. The ST Department is responsible for a large part of the curriculum of the bachelor’s and master’s programmes in Computer Science as well as the master’s programme in Embedded Systems. The inspiration for its research topics is largely derived from technical ICT problems in industry and society related to large-scale distributed processing, embedded systems, programming productivity, and web-based information analysis.

The research of the Software Engineering Group focuses on empirical research, conducted in close collaboration with software development practice. Topics of interest include software testing, software architecture, end user programming, modern code review, and collaborative and distributed software development. We conduct our research in mixed teams in collaboration with practitioners and international researchers. Courses we teach include programming, software engineering, testing, software architecture, globally distributed software engineering, and mining software repositories. The group employs approximately 25 people, including full, Associate, and Assistant Professors, post-docs, and PhD students. The group is led by Prof. Arie van Deursen.
