The International Institute of Social Studies (part of Erasmus University Rotterdam) seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in Governance and Public Policy.


The successful candidate will have broad scientific training and experience, including an interdisciplinary background in social science and international development studies. He/she is expected to teach and research on governance and public policy and management, including in relation to specific policy areas. Expertise on the politics of policy-making and/or in public management will be strong advantages. The candidate should preferably have a track record of research and teaching in the area of policy on climate change; further, familiarity with one or more of the other ISS cross-cutting themes (conflict and peace; social protection and inequality; and migration and diversity) would be an advantage.

Candidates must have clear research interests and an active publication strategy. Ability to attract and manage research grants is expected. The appointee would be encouraged to pursue relevant externally financed advisory and capacity building opportunities.

The candidate’s teaching base would be the Major in Governance and Development Policy but the successful candidate is expected to contribute flexibly within our graduate school of international development studies, including to other teaching and teaching management in the MA in Development Studies, and to MA and PhD research supervision. Ability to teach some area or areas of research methodology will be a strong advantage; familiarity with mixed-methods research is desirable.

The selected candidate will be offered a contract at the level of Assistant Professor.


In accordance with the conditions applied at Erasmus University Rotterdam as indicated in the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO NU) of the Dutch universities, the salary is dependent on the candidate’s experience and ranges from € 3.427,- to € 5.330,- gross per month under full-time contract. In addition, EUR pays an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8,3% and offers excellent secondary benefits.
