The PhD researcher actively contributes to the further development and implementation of the project and engages in the research outlined above. S/he drafts several related research questions that are firmly grounded in state-of-the-art theory and models. S/he develops research designs, and executes approved designs, incl. data acquisition, and statistical analyses. The PhD candidate writes at minimum three academic papers that are presented at international conferences and submitted to scientific journals in year 3 and 4. Besides the research assignments, the PhD student also teaches a variety of work groups, and some lectures, mainly in the undergraduate programs “Global Management of Social Issues” and Organization Studies or Sociology respectively.
Tilburg University is among the top Dutch employers and has an excellent policy concerning terms of employment. The collective employment terms and conditions for Dutch universities will apply. The PHD appointment begins with a period of 12 months. Continuation of the appointment with another 36 months will be based on performance evaluation. The gross salary for the PHD position amounts € 2191 per month in the first year, rising to € 2801 per month in the fourth year, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week).
Organizational Forms and Consequences of Social Entrepreneurship in an International Perspective
The project seeks to contribute to our understanding of the organizational forms and business models of social actors engaged in social entrepreneurship activities, the respective business outcomes, as well as economic development and well-being, social and sustainability effects. A special focus is on social entrepreneurship as a way to address wicked problems or grand challenges such as poverty, inequality, and sustainability. The project consists of two interrelated parts and encompasses two PhD positions:
1 - PhD in the area of Sociology
The PhD student will assess the effects of social entrepreneurship models on business outcomes, economic development and well-being, social impact and sustainability. The goal is to gather longitudinal and comparative national-level information from various data sources on the prevalence and spending with regard to social entrepreneurship and link these to indicators for social, economic and environmental development and well-being. The Phd-student creates and analyses a longitudinal and comparative macro-level dataset with multiple indicators for social entrepreneurship and its social consequences, focusing on both Western and Non-Western countries. The PhD will be affiliated with the Department of Sociology at Tilburg University. The research program focuses on social inequality and social cohesion in a comparative perspective. 2 - PhD in the area of Organization Studies
The second part will apply a micro perspective and will investigate the different organizational forms and business models linked to social entrepreneurship (such as self-employed, networked) as well as their functioning and effectiveness. The PhD student will identify a total of 60-80 social entrepreneurship initiatives in 4-6 European and non-Western countries and collect original data via questionnaires and interviews on the business models, organizational characteristics, functioning, effectiveness and learning in the area of poverty reduction/economic development, health and sustainability. The PhD project is embedded in the research program of the Department of Organization Studies at Tilburg University, which focuses on relational perspectives of adaptive organizations.
