The Department for Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University is looking for two Assistant Professors in the field of Practical Philosophy, with a focus on Philosophical Ethics. The positions include both teaching (70%) and research in this field (30%). The position is part of the Ethics Institute within the Department. Together with the group for "Theoretical Philosophy" and the "History of Philosophy", this group is responsible for the Department’s research and teaching in philosophy.
We are looking for two colleagues who can contribute significantly to research in the field of ethics, and who have teaching expertise and interest in both ethics and political philosophy. With regard to research, we expect these colleagues to have a solid background in philosophical ethics (including the history of the field) and a research specialization that fits the expertise of the Ethics Institute. We are particularly interested in applications from candidates who combine a specialization in normative ethics with expertise in climate ethics, bioethics or economic ethics. Also, we specifically want to invite candidates who combine analytic and hermeneutic approaches to normative ethics.
With regard to teaching, we expect proven teaching skills and the ability to teach courses across a wide range of areas in practical philosophy. The assistant professors will teach at both the BA- and MA-level, contribute to interdisciplinary teaching activities, supervise theses, and be available for teaching-related administrative tasks, such as committee work or curriculum development.
The candidate is also expected to be available for other administrative tasks in the Department and/or Faculty, resulting, when appropriate, in proportional reductions in teaching duties.
- have finished your PhD;
- have a strong international track record in research in the field of philosophical ethics, as demonstrated by publications in international journals and/or with the important publishers in the field;
- are an inspiring and experienced teacher who can develop and teach courses on both BA- and MA-level, as documented by a strong track record in teaching and a certificate in academic teaching;
- Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers, and you are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) if you are not already in possession of one.
- are able and willing to teach in Dutch and in English (we expect foreign candidates to master the Dutch language within two years);
- have proven your ability to perform innovative research at a high level, and are willing and able to compete for national and international research grants;
- have the ability to play an appropriate role in departmental management and to contribute fully to the academic life of the Department.
We offer a position, starting September 1st 2017. The initial appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of two years. Subject to satisfactory performance, this will be followed by a permanent appointment. Salary depends on qualifications and experience and will range from €3,427 to €5,330 (scale 11/12 Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) gross per month for a full-time employment.
Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8 % and a year-end bonus of 8.3 % per year. We offer a pension scheme, collective insurance schemes and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model). More information: working at Utrecht University.
